You thought this day would never come, didn't you? Well, guess what!? It turns out that there are too many cheesy metal videos in this world to be left unnoticed. That is why I have decided to follow up on my original promise and make fun share my thoughts on some of metal's "greatest" music videos. While a majority of these will be power metal videos (mainly because they seem to generate the cheesiest of the cheese), I will make sure not to neglect the other "masterpieces" from other sub genres. So, without further ado, here is the first weekly installment of Music Video Monday!
Lets kick off this party right with Finland's biggest act, Nightwish. I wasn't even joking in that last sentence. The band is LITERALLY the most successful group from Finland in terms of worldwide sales. After former singer, Tarja Turenen, left the band in 2005, the band went in a slightly more mainstream direction with their new singer, Anette Olzon, which shows in one of their biggest hits, "Bye Bye Beautiful".
Someone who might be listening to the band for the first time may be led to believe that Nightwish is an all-female troupe during the beginning of the video. Their reality will be quickly shattered when these attractive women are transformed into several frightening Scandinavian gentlemen at the 1:02 mark. Despite their appearances, they are still more attractive than Anette Olzon.
As if the initial cock-tease wasn't enough, we are then frequently reminded that the beautiful women from earlier (excluding *Anette) don't actually exist by having them appear at random spots. This leads to fantasizing about what could have been rather than what we are actually given.
As for the song itself, the beginning sounds like something that should be playing during a Final Fantasy boss battle, while the chorus sounds like the band attempting to sound like Evanescence. Why anyone would ever want to sound like Evanescence is beyond me. Even so, I CAN'T GET THIS SONG OUT OF MY HEAD! Everything about it is so dumb and yet I love it! No wonder these guys so popular!
*For anyone who thinks I'm being too hard on Anette Olzon, I will say she looks better as a blonde.*
